QuarkStyle Behind The Brands: Smartwool

Quarks is proud to announce our newest brand, SmartWool! The reviews are in, and the people want more SmartWool, so here it is! We have stocked our instore and online shelves with the best of the brand and now you have the chance to experience the magic for yourself. Have you ever experienced wet, uncomfortable, smelly feet? Of course you have, haven't we all? Well those days are behind us because SmartWool is changing the way we see socks.

New England ski instructors Peter and Patty Duke founded the company in 1994 in Steamboat Spring, Colorado and a year later the company was acquired by Timberland. Since then, SmartWool has manufactured technical clothing inspired by the active and rugged lifestyle of the Colorado rockies.

At the heart of the SmartWool brand is Merino wool, one of the finest and softest types of sheep's wool. Why is Merino wool so good?

  • It's temperature regulating. When worn directly against the skin, Merino wool provides exceptional warmth without overheating, drawing sweat away from the wearer, otherwise known as 'wicking'.
  • It's moisture repellant. Hydrophobic keratin fibers at one end and hydrophilic fibers at the other make you feel dry in even the soggiest conditions.
  • It's warm. Merino wool has a great warmth-to-weight ratio, because it's small fibers have tiny holes of dead air, which trap your body heat and keep you warm.
  • It's anti-microbial. Merino wool contains lanolin, which has anti-bacterial properties.

Ok, enough science. The bottom line is SmartWool believes in the power of comfort and quality. SmartWool is on a mission to keep you enjoying life outdoors as long as possible, as comfortably as possible. After all, if you're comfortable, your body performs better. SmartWool socks are a hug for your feet! They won't slide down in your boots, they'll keep your feet warm and dry and they'll last much longer than your average socks. What more could you ask for?
